Greasy hair isn’t glamorous, but oil is a key product to keep dry strands looking (and feeling) hydrated, regardless of your hair texture or type. But are all oils created equal? Not so fast. “Rather than choosing an oil for your hair type, you should consider what you need the oil to do for your hair,” shares certified trichologist and hairstylist at Crown Worthy, Sophia Emmanuel, who says to pay attention to ingredients, which will help you decide which oil you really need.
For example, if you’re looking for something to enhance shine, carrier oils like olive, carrot, or jojoba can help with that. However, if you are looking for an oil that provides heat protection when using hot tools, silicone is your BFF. “Silicone coats the hair and allows the heat from hot tools to penetrate it slowly and evenly,” adds Emmanuel. And, if you’re the type to recoil at the mention of silicone, don’t. “Generally speaking, silicones are safe to use in hair-care products. They coat the surface of the hair to smooth, add shine, and protect from heat,” says New York City-based dermatologist Joshua Zeichner. But use them in moderation: “Continued used of silicones over time can weigh down the hair, so it is important to regularly wash the hair to remove them so they don’t build up.” Another ingredient that similarly coats and protects the hair is dimethicone.
Like we said, hair oils should be used with a light hand and when necessary. “Keep in mind, how you apply oil to the hair and scalp, how often you shampoo, as well as your hair and your scalp condition can play a huge role in which oil you need and when you need it,” adds hairstylist and salon owner, Tina Pearson.
